In Reading and Spelling Club, students will explore both fiction and non-fiction texts, building key skills to enhance their reading fluency, comprehension, and spelling mastery. Each week, students will rotate through three differentiated group activities designed to meet their unique learning needs, fostering a love of reading and a deep understanding of texts.

What We’ll Focus On:

Reading Comprehension: Retell stories, identify key story elements like setting, characters, and sequence of events, and determine the central idea and supporting details.
Finding Text Evidence: Develop skills to look back in the text, highlight answers, and use evidence to support responses.
Fluency Skills: Practice reading with expression, accuracy, natural phrasing, and proper pacing.
Grammar and Phonics: Reinforce weekly grammar and phonics concepts from Superkids to strengthen foundational skills.
Spelling Activities: Engage in hands-on games and creative activities to reinforce weekly spelling words and recognize patterns in language.

Week 1:
- Read: A New Year’s Resolution (fiction)
- Spelling: Magic Spelling, Word Boxes, & Word Scramble
Week 2:
- Read: All About Penguins (non-fiction)
- Spelling: Picture Perfect – Hide your spelling words in a winter scene.
Week 3:
- Read: Sammy the Snowman (fiction)
- Spelling: Snowy Spelling Game
Week 4:
- Read: Oh No, Not the Dentist! (fiction)
- Spelling: Winter-Themed Cover-All Game
Week 5:
- Read: Punxsutawney Phil (non-fiction)
- Spelling: Stamp Your Spelling Words
Week 6:
- Read: The Homemade Valentines (fiction)
- Spelling: Love List – Write each word inside a heart.
Week 7:
- Read: A Sweet-Smelling Surprise (fiction)
- Spelling: I Love Spelling Game
Week 8:
- Read: A Sick Day for Danny (fiction)
- Spelling: Valentine’s-Themed Cover-All Game

Through these engaging activities, students will strengthen their reading skills, enhance their spelling abilities, and build confidence while having fun!

Important Details

-The credit card you provide at registration will not be charged until the first week of each session. If the minimum number of registrants is not met, your card will not be charged.
-Program fees are non-refundable and non-transferable unless there is insufficient enrollment.
-No make-ups will be scheduled for inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.
-If a vendor is ill, all efforts will be made to arrange a make-up class.
-Parent/guardian is responsible for reminding their child of classes.
-All vendors have been cleared per Diocesan policy with respect to fingerprinting and background checks.
-There are no After School Clubs held on No School days.
-If you select a club for your child that does not begin immediately following dismissal (e.g. a class start time of 3:30pm M/T/Th/F or 2:30pm Wed.), you will be charged the Champions drop-in rate or your Champions plan will be utilized if applicable.
